With the landslide victory of Bangladeshi Awami League in General Elections 2018, Sheikh Hasina registered her third consecutive term as Prime Minister of the country. Consequently, Salman F Rahman won from the Dhaka-1 constituency. In addition, he has been appointed as the Private Industry and Investment Advisor in the seven member advisor panel to Hasina. From one of the most successful businessman of Bangladesh to a political journey, Rahman’s story is nothing short of inspiring.

Salman F Rahman started his career with an inherited jute mill, which was under heavy debts. Though he managed to bring the facility to a profit-making stage, it was nationalized with the independence of Bangladesh in 1971. In the successive year, Rahman started Beximco, an export import company that dealt in seafood. With international markets as prime target, he observed the country’s need for medicines and imported pharmaceuticals worth the cost of the export deal. Prioritizing the country’s requirements over company profits, Rahman introduced Beximco Pharmaceuticals in 1980.

Beximco Pharmaceuticals marked the beginning of the parent company’s expansion in different fields like textiles, ceramics, energy, real estate, and much more. Within approximately two decades, Salman F Rahman’s vision and hard work transformed Beximco Group into the largest conglomerate of Bangladesh. His work with the company can be attributed as one of the prime reasons of being the Private Sector Development Affairs Advisor to Sheikh Hasina since 2009.

Salman F Rahman, apart from his company, has had numerous achievements in the form of premier position in multiple industries. He was the head of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI), the apex trade body, from 1994 to 1996. In addition, he is a director of Dhaka Stock Exchange and Bangladesh Security and Exchange Commission. Currently, he serves as the president of Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) and LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh (LOAB).

All that said, the expectations from his political career are already soaring. This comes after Salman F Rahman’s experience worth decades with the local industries as well as their corresponding global markets. It is speculated that the future developments could be focused on improving the private sector, skilled labor, and infrastructural potential. And in such a scenario, Rahman’s expertise would play a crucial role.

With Vision 2021 as the main objective of Bangladesh government, it will be interesting to see how the political statesman can utilize his knowledge and contribute towards the country’s growth.
