Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman yesterday said the state-owned Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) has become a profitable and public-friendly organisation over the period of last six months.
"PM Sheikh Hasina has paid special attention to this sector and as a result, the BRTC has started making profits in the last six months," he noted.
He came up with the statement while inaugurating two new air-conditioned (AC) buses on the Dohar/ Nawabganj-Dhaka route.
The BRTC, he said, is the property of the government, and that means it is the property of the people. Hence, the people should take care of it.“I do not want this service to be wasted as quickly as any other service. There was no good transportation in this area before the elections. But now we have completed most of the road construction work,” he said.
The buses will run from Dohar to Dhaka and Bandura- Nawabganj to Dhaka. The fare has been fixed at Tk 120. For now, these two buses will provide services to the people and later the number of buses will be increased.
Salman F Rahman, also a Member of the Parliament (MP) from Dhaka-1 constituency, said efforts were on to make Dohar and Nawabganj model upazilas. He also gave words to gradually implement all his promises made to the people of the two upazilas.
The lawmaker said to the people of his constituency that he strives to stay beside them all the time. “I’m trying to be at your side all the time,” he said. Later, he listened to the people about their problems at the Nawabganj upazila office.
“I’m here to listen to your stories so that I can stand beside you in time of your need,” the lawmaker told some 50 people who had gathered at the upazila nirbahi officer’s (UNO’s) office.
Salman said, “I prefer getting connected more with the people at grassroots level than the leaders, and feel like understanding the sufferings of the people of my area.”
In Dohar, Afroza Akhter Riba, UNO of Dohar upazila, Md Alamgir Hossain, chairman of the upazila, Md Sazzad Hossaain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dohar police station, and in Nababganj, HM Salauddin Ahmed, UNO of Nababganj, Mostafa Kamal, officer-in-charge of the upazila, Nasir Uddin Jhilu, upazila chairman, and officials of different government bodies were present.
