Full-swing work of the most coveted Sheikh Kamal Sports Complex on Abahani playground in the capital will start from August 5, the 70th birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal, the founder of the club.
Salman F Rahman MP, chairman of the Abahani Limited, announced this during a reception in his Gulshan office yesterday. The reception was accorded to him on being elected as a member of parliament (MP) by Abahani ‘Samarthak Goshti’, the supporters’ forum of the club.
In his address to the Abahani fans, Salman F Rahman said he had expected that the fans would felicitate him and offer thanks for his speech in parliament about Sheik Kamal, rather than praising him for his works as a businessman for the betterment of the country .
“However, I thank you for the reception, but I don’t like to be praised for the different duties I have been performing,” he said.
“In the parliament, I said all about our great sport organiser Sheikh Kamal. As a witness, I had seen a lot of businessmen offering him businesses and trying to involve him in their business, but he denied. He had a great passion for sports and Abahani,” Rahman continued.
“Sheikh Kamal was not a greedy person, he had no intention to make money. He only thought about the youth to build a new Bangladesh free from drug abuse and all bad habits,” said Rahman.
“But till now, nobody in parliament has so far spoken about Sheikh Kamal’s wonderful and enthusiastic character. Earlier, people used to speak false and fabricated stories about Sheik Kamal.”
Salman F Rahman also said it is very malicious to distort the history, which was done after 1975. He also said it is unfortunate that after 1975 Bangladesh and Bangabandhu family members fell victim to propaganda. But no country can develop if it does not tell the correct history to its people, Rahman added.
Turning to demand of the Samarthak Goshthi about Sheikh Kamal Sports Complex, he said, “Actually, it is now just a matter of time to begin the work in full swing. Hopefully, we will start it gorgeously on the 70th birthday of Sheikh Kamal, on August 5, in the presence of the prime minister.”
