Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Zhang Zuo paid a courtesy call on Salman F Rahman, Private Sector Industry and Investment Adviser to the Prime Minister, at the latter’s office in Gulshan in the capital yesterday. During the call, the ambassador conveyed to the adviser the interest of high-profile Chinese companies to invest in Bangladesh. The meeting also discussed various matters that include bilateral trade, Chinese direct investment in Bangladesh, Chinese financing into mega infrastructure projects, industrial parks, energy sector, and Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Bangladesh. The ambassador recalled that China remained Bangladesh’s largest trading partner and foreign direct investment source, while the economic, trade and business relations between the two countries were increasing remarkably.
Ambassador Zuo also raised some issues faced by Chinese SMEs in Bangladesh and invited the adviser to join a meeting with their representatives. He said China was eager to advance the already excellent bilateral relations and help the government launch and implement projects that would create jobs for the local population.
During the meeting, Salman F Rahman thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for China’s continued support for Bangladesh’s development. He recalled that several mega infrastructural projects in Bangladesh—such as the Padma Bridge, Karnaphuli tunnel project, railway project—are financed by China. Adviser Rahman accepted the ambassador’s invitation to the meeting with the representatives of Chinese SMEs in Bangladesh, saying any issues being faced by them will be resolved.
He also updated the ambassador on progress being made on easing the process of doing business and investing in the country. The adviser, furthermore, sought the ambassador’s assistance in containing some illicit practices adopted by unscrupulous traders to avoid paying due customs duties. In response, the ambassador agreed to help resolve the matter by arranging discussions between representatives of both countries.
